Abstract
In recent years it has become evident that occupational exposure to certain industrial chemicals may induce chromosomal damage (Das 1988). Unsaturated polyester resins have a wide commercial use in the furniture industry for surface coating. They are complex mixtures and made in several steps. A saturated dihydric alcohol (glycol) is generally condensed with both a saturated and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid. Polyhydric alcohols are sometimes used to provide strength and chemical resistance. Maleic acid (anhydride) and fumaric acid are the usual unsaturated acids although itaconic or mesaconic acid may be used to give flexibility.
