Abstract

The most important danger for health and productivity of the cattle population in Cuba are protozoan infections like anaplasmosis, piroplasmosis, babesiosis and eperitrozoonosis. The most efficient way for the treatment of these diseases is to attack the ticks which are responsible for transferring the infections of these diseases. Thus the pharmacological research of Cuba had the task to find domestic products against ticks. Furan derivatives which could be used as antiparasitic drugs after intensive pharmacological-toxicological tests rise as secondary products from the extracted sugarcane. The compound UC-244 (Fig. 1) is such a secondary product of sugar industry. It showed a good antiparasitic effect in concentrations from 0.3% on (Donato 1988).
