Abstract
Glutathione (reduced form: GSH, oxidized form: GSSG) serves a broad spectrum of functions in the liver (for review see Meister and Anderson 1983; Kretzschmar and Klinger 1990). GSH is transported into the circulation through the sinusoidal membrane by a carrier transport system (Kaplowitz et al 1985). This fact is important for supplying extrahepatic tissues with GSH or cysteine (Bannai and Tataishi 1986). Recently, Burgunder and Lauterburg (1987) demonstrated that liver cirrhosis in man is associated with decreased GSH plasma levels. The authors concluded from these data that GSH synthesis in cirrhotic liver is decreased.
