Abstract
The Lagrangian procedure is helpful in setting up equations of motion and simplifying them through the use of cyclic coordinates and their constant conjugate momenta. But once this has been done, it is up to us to solve the equations. This chapter will develop methods which will later lead to solutions with a minimum of equation-solving; in fact a large class of calculations will be reduced in Chap. 6 to the evaluation of a few integrals. (Problems not so reducible are of an altogether different order of difficulty, and except for the chapter on perturbation theory we shall not get involved in solving them.)
