Abstract

Because of its potent vasodilatory effect [1], nifedipine has been well known to lower blood pressure not only in experimental hypertensive animals [2] but also in human hypertensive subjects [3]. However, duration of the hypotensive effect of nifedipine in capsule form is rather short compared with that of other antihypertensive drugs [2]. This requires the daily administration of three or four nifedipine capsules to hypertensive patients to obtain good control of blood pressure levels. To overcome the short duration of action of nifedipine capsule, a retard form of nifedipine, nifedipine tablet, has recently been developed which enables the control of blood pressure through two daily administrations. In the present study, we have examined the efficacy of nifedipine tablet in the long-term treatment of hypertensive patients.
