Abstract

Jigoro Kano, founder of modern judo, combined the activities and methods of jujitsu with a concept for self-defense into a “comprehensive exercise method for body and mind,” which is the major reason that judo is a sport suited for a great variety of participants. Judo allows individuals to concentrate on their own ability level, serving as a holistic means to promote the development of children, youth, and adults. Disabled and nondisabled individuals can find training and a challenge in this important sport.
