Abstract
Since the end of the sixties a number of pieces of equipment for quantitative image analysis have appeared on the market. Initially these instruments were mainly hardware designs, but in the last years they have been more computer oriented. The prices of instruments for quantitative analysis can vary considerably, from US $25 to US $175,000, depending on what is to be accomplished. However, it is possible to start with the basic elements, and then slowly expand the system as needed (so-called building-block or modular approach).
