Abstract
Starting with a brief historical sketch, the traditional observing techniques relevant to the extraction of data and knowledge about the nucleus are discussed. Next, in Sect. 2.3, the theories and models for the interpretation of the data prior to the spacecraft encounters are reviewed. The emphasis of the other sections in this chapter is placed on the new results.
