Summary
A group of 61 postmenopausal women suffering from osteoporosis (mean age 60 years, ranging from 38 to 93) was treated with a combination therapy consisting of NaF (80 mg/day), vitamin D3 (1000 IU/day), calcium (1 g/day) and estrogens (0.3 mg/day). In addition, the patients started a physical training program with a special osteoporosis gymnastic (20 min/day) and swimming in warm water twice a week.
Bone density of lumbar spine (vertebrae 2–4) was measured using a Dual Photon Densitometer before and after every 3 months of treatment up to a maximum of 21 months.
After 1 year of treatment bone density of the patient group was increased by 14% to a maximum of 20% after 21 months. A subgroup of patients (n=20, mean age 72 years, ranging from 67 to 93) showed a similar increase in bone density reaching 12% after 1 year and 16% after 18 months of treatment.
These data indicate that the combination therapy and physical exercises are effective in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, even in women of old age.
