Summary
Not only loss of bone mass but also changes in bone structure are important parameters for the degree of bone disease. In this paper a method is proposed that provides a procedure for quantitative determination of changes in bone structure. X-radiographs of trabecular bone regions are digitized and preprocessed in an image processing system. Subsequent two-dimensional FastFourier-Transformation generates a characteristic gray-scale pattern in the two-dimensional spatial frequency plane. Radial integration for each angular direction then provides characteristic gray-scale distribution that allows quantification of the regularity of bone structure.
