Summary

Retardation or accelerated maturation of bone, and disorders of ossification caused by hormonal dysregulation are described. Bone maturation in infants can be easily determined on radiographs of the hand within the first decade. In the course of puberty the evaluation of the physeal growth plate, the occurrence of apophyseal bone centers, and the fusion of apophyses to the shaft yield important information about completion of skeletal maturation. Partial or complete persistance of growth plates and apophyses in adults may indicate hormonal dysregulation due to hypophyseal insufficiency, hypothyreosis, and hypogonadism or in combined endocrine disorders. The morphology in disorders of apophyseal ossification as seen on x-rays of adults is demonstrated in a number of cases.
