Abstract

The immunological characteristics of atopy and the inflammatory changes of AD occur in skin which is altered in many respects although being of normal appearance clinically. This coincides with the author’s definition of AD as being “a specific dermatitis in the abnormally reacting skin of the atopic,” and gave rise to the introduction of the definition “symptom-free skin” (see Chap. 1). The alterations in the symptom-free skin in AD include several structural and/or functional changes which may be of primary, and frequently of nonimmunological, character, or secondary to immunological and pathophysiological changes present in the disease.
