Abstract

Since I came to the United States I have been working on the H-2 system, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of mouse. I was very fortunate to start in the center of activity, in Jan Klein’s laboratory. It fills me with a special pride and joy that it was during my stay in his laboratory that we were one of several groups to discover immune response-associated (Ia) antigens. The finding of Ia antigens, later named class II antigens, presented us with enormous research opportunities.
