Abstract
In 1951, when I started to study medicine at the Karlova Universita (Charles University) in Prague, I was interested in working at the Institute of General Biology. An older, politically powerful student manipulated me into the department of “aspirants.” These aspirants were so called because they hoped to become Candidate of Science (corresponding to a PhD). The department was headed by a young man fresh from medical school — Milan Hašek. His wife Vera, Marta Vojtiskova, and Jan Grozdanovic also belonged to the group. The technicians were Ludek Martinek and Eva Linkova. One year later Tomas Hraba came, and the following year Jan Hort joined the group.
