The Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue and Its Tumours

Gastrointestinal Pathology

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Pathology ((CT PATHOLOGY,volume 81))

Abstract

Our joint experience of primary gut lymphomas is based on studies performed on a series of over 250 cases culled from the files of the Departments of Histopathology of St. Bartholomew’s and St. Mark’s hospitals, London, England. We attempt, herein, to provide a practical account of present understanding of the pathology of gut lymphomas. This is a rapidly evolving subject and some of our views may be regarded as controversial at least. We intend oµr statements on classification to be regarded as tentative because of the incompleteness of understanding of the biology, pathology, clinical course and optimal treatment of these relatively rare tumours. However, we believe the line we have taken to be compatible with the emerging consensus view on a provisional classification of gut lymphomas.
