Emergency Laparoscopy

  • Giorgio Dagnini

Abstract

Only since the 1960s has laparoscopy been used for abdominal emergencies. Until then laparoscopy had been considered contraindicated in acute abdomen because the premedication required, pneumoperitoneum, was considered too risky. It was also thought that trauma from the examination might cause a further deterioration in the patient’s condition. Yet the first attempts at laparoscopy in patients with acute abdomen proved that the risks were minimal and, moreover, information and invaluable data were obtained in situations in which an accurate diagnosis had to be made quickly [1, 2].
