Abstract

The hair root is characterized by a high rate of cell proliferation and is a very sensitive system of the human body. It can react to the slightest endogenous and exogenous stimuli with morphological and biochemical alterations of its activity. The connective tissue structures at the base of the hair papilla as well as in the root sheats of the hair follicle may be of considerable importance in this regard. Some findings indicate that in particular the glycosaminoglycans of the peritrichial tissue have a major influence on hair growth, although their precise role in these processes is still unknown. The structure and possible significance of the glycosaminoglycans will therefore be dealt with here.
