Menschliches Prolaktin ist ein einkettiges Polypeptid, das von den laktotropen Zellen des HVL gebildet und ohne nennenswerte Speicherung sezerniert wird. Es besitzt eine enge Strukturverwandtschaft zum menschlichen Somatotropin (GH) und plazentaren Laktogen (HPL).
