Abstract

This chapter presents alignments for c-type cytochrome sequences, and matrices defining their degree of similarity. The sequences are recorded in the single letter code (Table 3.1) with a single space between each residue except where gaps are required for optimal alignment. Where possible gaps or insertions have been placed on the basis of crystallographic structures. Otherwise the use of gaps has been kept to a minimum since it is not statistically justified to insert gaps for a small increase in identities (Needleman and Wunsch, 1970). Regions of the sequence for which information is tentative are shown in parenthesis.
