Summary
Physical exercise is an important aspect of the treatment of hypertension. It influences hypertension by lowering body weight, through the excretion of sodium with the sweat, and by favoring the action of the parasympathetic nervous system. Besides, an autonomous effect of physical exercise is thought to lower high blood pressure. Muscle biopsies show that endurance training increases the number of red muscle fibers and promotes the formation of capillaries, thus lowering the peripheral resistance. The clinical importance of the so-called stress hypertension (hypertension on exertion) is controversial.
