Zusammenfassung
Schmerz im Säuglingsalter ist ein bis in die frühen 70er Jahre hin ignoriertes Problem. Bis dahin galt die Meinung, sowohl die unvollständige Myelinisation beim Neugeborenen wie auch die kortikale Unreife schließen eine Schmerzwahrnehmung aus und man hat sich angemaßt, dem Früh- und Neugeborenen ein Schmerzerleben oder -empfinden abzusprechen mit der Überlegung, daß ihm ein Schmerzbewußtsein und ein Schmerzerinnern fehlen. Solche Vorstellung bildeten dann die Basis für operative Eingriffe am nichtanästhesierten Neugeborenen, dies mit der Begründung, daß Früh- und auch Reifgeborene bis zum 3. Monat keinerlei kortikale Hirnaktivität aufwiesen, und da sie folglich keine Erinnerung an Schmerzen hätten, wären sie nicht in der Lage, schmerzhafte von anderen Reizen zu unterscheiden. Es gibt hierfür in der Literatur zahlreiche Belege, wo z.B. für die Operation gastrointestinaler Mißbildungen lediglich ein Muskelrelaxans eingesetzt wurde.
