Although the road to Mount Scopus was in Arab hands, the Armistice agreement between Israel and the neighboring countries assured us free access to this site, and therefore the possibility of continuing our work at the University. The Jordanians, however, never kept their promise; the Arab legion only allowed us to bring police guards via the access road to the University in closed convoys at prearranged times. In this way, we were effectively cut off from the University premises, housing all our books, instruments and collections.
