Abstract

The Sahel ecological zone, a 3 million km2 strip, stretches across the African Continent from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, between the 100–600 mm isohyets of mean annual rainfall. It thus appears as a transition belt separating the Sahara Desert from the Sudanian savannas.
