Abstract
Coconuts are grown extensively in the tropics, and millions of people depend on the crop for their livelihood. However, the productivity of coconut trees is generally low, despite the fact that many efforts have been made to improve their yield potential. The long life span and heterozygosity seem to be the limiting factors in coconut improvement through breeding. Thus the production of inbred lines for this purpose is difficult and time-consuming. Unconventional methods must therefore be evolved as a means of shortening the inbreeding cycle (Thanh-Tuyen and de Guzman 1983 a).
