Abstract

Simultaneous induction of vitamin E deficiency exacerbates most of the Se-deficiency disorders in animals (Thompson and Scott 1969, 1970). These two nutrients have sparing effects upon the dietary requirement for both (Bieri 1961; Hamilton and Tappel 1963), and hence are considered to have overlapping, complementary functions in the antioxidative defense mechanisms in the cells of different mammalian organs. The quantitative significance remains yet unclear, however, regarding the protection afforded by glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) compared with that afforded by vitamin E (Tappel 1980; Levander 1986). This chapter presents three lines of experimental evidence pointing to the predominant function of GSH-Px in antioxidant defense mechanisms.
