Abstract
Increased platelet aggregation and an altered arachidonic acid metabolism was reported in selenium-deficient animals (Schoene et al. 1986; Bryant et al. 1983). The selenium-dependent enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) may influence the platelet metabolism by regulating the hydroperoxide level within the cell (Schoene 1985). The activity of the GSH-Px can be markedly influenced by changes in dietary selenium intake (Levander 1983). The purpose of this pilot study was twofold, firstly to establish the effect of a selenium supplementation on platelet GSH-Px activity and secondly to gain an insight into the influence of elevated selenium intake on the platelet aggregation and the production of arachidonic acid metabolites in man.
