Zusammenfassung

Eigentlich stammt die Gesundheitspsychologie nicht, wie viele Leute meinen, aus den USA, sondern aus der Antike. Nach der Legende brachte Zeus, der Olympische Hauptgott, den Heiler Asclepius wegen seiner heilerischen Fähigkeiten in den Himmel. Asclepius hatte 2 Töchter: Hygeia und Panacea. Hygeia, bekannt als die Göttin der Gesundheit und der Prävention, lehrte die Griechen, daß sie gesund sein könnten, wenn sie sich in allen Formen ihres Verhaltens mäßigten. Panacea, die andere Tochter, war bekannt als die Göttin der Heilkunst und repräsentierte die fortwährende Suche nach Behandlung aller Krankheiten (Lyons u. Petrucelli 1978). Weil die Gesundheitspsychologie die Rolle des Verhaltens bei Gesundheit und Krankheitsentstehung studiert, könnten wir Hygeia als die Göttin der Gesundheits-psychologie betrachten.
