Zusammenfassung
Nach Statistiken der WHO sind derzeit weltweit etwa 37 Millionen Menschen an Krebs erkrankt. Die Zahl der Neuerkrankungen liegt bei über 5,9 Millionen jährlich. Jedes Jahr sterben 4,3 Millionen Menschen an Krebs [18]. Eine Krebserkrankung muß zwar nicht zwangsläufig mit Schmerzen einhergehen, bei einer Vielzahl der Patienten stellen sich jedoch im Laufe der Erkrankung Schmerzen ein, vorübergehend oder auf Dauer, über Wochen, Monate, manchmal gar Jahre anhaltend. Diese teilweise unerträglichen Schmerzen bringen unsagbares Leid über die betroffenen Patienten, bestimmen deren gesamtes Leben und lassen es zu einer Qual werden. In welcher Häufigkeit muß nun bei den einzelnen Tumorerkrankungen mit Schmerzen gerechnet werden? Sind Schmerzen lediglich ein Begleitsymptom des terminalen Erkrankungsstadiums?
