Abstract
The following paper presents a partial solution to the linguistic problem known as the unbounded dependency construction (UDC) problem in the context of an MT project. This partial solution takes into account the following givens:
-
(i)
As Eurotra is a machine translation project the solution of the UDC problem has to fit into a theory of translation, i.e. it has to be designed as a part of a machine translation system,
-
(ii)
The formalism designed for the MT-system does not allow for global mechanisms. Therefore we have to find a “local solution” which is partially imported from GPSG.
-
(iii)
The linguistic model is a stratificational approach. On three different levels of linguistic analysis tree structures are created, the transition from one level to the next is achieved by a translator which is a tree-to-tree transducer.
-
(iv)
Two of the three levels are relational ones. That means for the treatment of UDCs that a solution has to be located in the interaction of constituent grammar and functional grammar and the translator between them.
