Abstract

The genetically obese Zucker rat, characterized by the presence of the double recessive gene fa is a model of obesity and insulin resistance. It has a moderate hyperglycemia, and an abnormal oral glucose tolerance [1]. Ultimately, it develops ocular complications [2]. It thus represents a potential model of at least some aspects of noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
