Endorectal Sonography

Extracorporeal ultrasonic scanners have always been considered unsatisfactory for imaging the gastrointestinal tract. The reasons are the presence of intestinal gas and the limited resolution of the low frequencies used. The rectum expecially, hidden as it is within the bony structures of the pelvis, is not accessible to extracorporeal ultrasound. However, as interest in the diagnostic imaging of rectal cancer has grown, refined sonographic techniques combining endoscopy and sonography have been introduced.
