Abstract

There has been increasing discussion in the Federal Republic of Germany over the past few years concerning the relationship between urban design and crime.1 However, empirically based knowledge about this subject is still lacking. The Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) therefore willingly agreed to a suggestion made by the Düsseldorf district administration to include the issue of crime prevention in a comprehensive program on urban renewal in Solingen. The objective of the project was to explore the relationship between crime and building design and infrastructure. The results were to be considered in the plans for urban redevelopment.2
