Abstract
The rapidity with which such highly differentiated cells as GMG cells appear has led many investigators to question their origin. Selye and McKeown (1935), identifying mitoses in endothelial cells, smooth muscle and fibroblasts, suggested that generalised metaplasia gave rise to GMG cells but the concept of metaplasia was not accepted by Wolfe and Wright (1942).
