Status report on four-dimensional strings

Abstract

Two of the most attractive properties of string theories are, on the one hand, the quantization of general relativity which is always present, and on the other hand, the automatic unification of all elementary interactions including gauge, matter and Higgs sectors [1]. String theories replace the notion of the elementary point particles with one-dimensional extended loops and are believed to be free of ultra-violet divergences [1]. Their motion in space-time describes a two-dimensional surface (world-sheet) and is parametrized with some co-ordinates Xµ(σ,t) depending on the two-dimensional variables σ and t.
