Studies on floral ecology and functional evolution of flowers have become more expanded since my last report (Prog Bot 47). The reasons are several. Ecological investigations of flowers more and more reveal the dynamic face of the life history of flowering plants. By more refined methods of population biology, paleontology, genetics, physics and chemistry, the selective and driving forces of pollination become better measurable and observable. As many aspects of botanical, zoological, and ecological sciences cross in the study of flowers and their function, the approach is becoming broader and broader. Our insight and understanding of flower, plant, and animal evolution benefits from these large amounts of data. However, it is becoming difficult to concentrate all aspects of floral ecology in one short review article. On the other hand, it would be a great error to let the “old flower biology” fall apart, because this field would lose its great impact in contributing to the understanding of function and evolution of flowers and plants. Therefore, as the present article is intended to trace major trends and developments of recent studies, in several chapters only reference to a limited number of original works and reviews is possible.
