Abstract

In higher plants unstable mutations affecting the morphology of flowers, leaves, and seeds have been known for a long time. Some of these mutations give rise to phenotypic spots or sectors in plant tissues and are due to mutations of the corresponding organs during somatic development. Changes of this kind are termed variegation.
