Molecular Mechanisms Controlling Proopiomelanocortin Gene Expression

Abstract

The search for molecular mechanisms of stress is a subject of active scientific investigation. One area of research interest is the involvement of neuropeptides in the body’s response to stress. The peptide hormone adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) is released from the anterior pituitary and acts upon the adrenal cortex to stimulate the release of glucocorticoids. This action occurs in response to a variety of stimuli which are referred to by the term “stress”. Delineating the mechanisms by which ACTH synthesis is regulated in the anterior pituitary would lead to a better understanding of the effects of stress and might lead to pharmacological methods to counteract some of the deleterious effects of stress.
