Abstract
Barbiturate coma is accepted therapy in controlling intracranial hypertension (Marshall et al. 1979; Rockoff et al. 1974). One of the problems in applying this method is to maintain the serum barbiturate at an adequate level. The burst-suppression pattern of EEG is advocated as a guide to an appropriate concentration but it does not develop in all patients (Kassell et al. 1980; Ward et al. 1985; Yano et al. 1981).
