Spin Trapping and Matrix Isolation E.S.R. Studies of Photo-Oxidation of Alcohols by Hexachlorometallate (IV) Ions (M = PT, PD, IR)

Abstract

The reduction potentials of [MCl6]2− ions (M = Pt, Pd, Ir) are enhanced on oxidation into the visible bands, and new photo-redox processes can be realised, e.g. oxidation of alcohols by ([PtCl6]2−)* to yield, successively, Pt(II) and Pt metal. [Inorg.Chem.25, 2910, (1986)] We report the site of oxidation of alcohols (RCH2OH, R2CHOH, R′R″CHOH, CH2CH(CHOH)n CH2OH) by ([MCl6]2−)* using E.S.R. Technique of spin trapping and matrix isolation.
