Subshell Closure at N = 56 in Very Neutron-Rich Bromine Isotopes

Abstract

The existence of a nuclear subshell closure at N = 56 has been derived by us several years ago from the systematics of nuclear binding energies, which were calculated from experimental Qβ-values |1|. This effect was shown to exist for nuclei with 37 ≦ Z ≦ 42. For nuclei with proton number Z ≧ 43, no such subshell closure is observed. In a later measurement of the Qβ-value of 9336 Kr57 it was found that for Z = 36, the submagic behaviour at N = 56 is still present |2|. But according to a recent theoretical calculation, this effect should vanish for the bromine isotopes (Z = 35) |3|
