Abstract
Observers of present-day Japan tend to be so impressed by the performance of the Japanese economy that any other aspect of society is equally likely to be considered a factor of economic success. Family life, leasure patterns, norms and values, social welfare—every aspect of life is interpreted as either being specifically crafted to stimulate economic growth or as being retarded in order to not to disturb economic growth. Whithin this context, obviously, the Japanese system of education should not be overlooked: Japanese education is frequently regarded as one of the most important prerequisites for the economic ”miracle” of Japan.
