Abstract
This paper focuses on the relation between economic growth and poverty. Many countries in Asia have experienced high growth rates with a market economy during the last 20 years. Especially Hong-Kong, Korea, Singapur and Taiwan experienced growth rates which were much higher than those of even the best performers in other countries. Their success has had a great impact on other developing countries who followed different development paths with more planning and import substitution. Many of these countries especially in Asia are now rethinking their economic strategy and like China and India foster a more market-oriented strategy. Their growth rate has increased substantially during this decade.
