Abstract

In this chapter the role of the surface in initiating the melting of a solid is discussed. A thermodynamic model is presented which shows that, under certain conditions, a disordered (quasi-liquid) layer forms on the surface just below the triple point. Recently, a number of surface sensitive probes have been used to search for the effect. Surface melting is indeed observed on a variety of crystal faces. The experimental methods used are explained and the results are compared with the predictions of the thermodynamic model.
