Experimental Aspects of Surface Roughening

  • Chapter
Chemistry and Physics of Solid Surfaces VII

Part of the book series: Springer Series in ((SSSUR,volume 10))

Abstract

The roughening of surfaces has been an active area of research in recent years. Although the theoretical groundwork for the roughening transition was formulated by Burton et al. in 1951 [14.1], direct experimental evidence for such a transition has been available only since 1980. In this review, the experimental aspects of research in this area will be discussed. Reference will be made to theoretical work, but only where it is needed to place experimental studies in a proper framework. However, theoretical aspects of surface roughening and equilibrium crystal shapes are discussed in Chap. 13 as well as elsewhere [14.2,3].
