Surface Electronic Interactions of Slow Ions and Metastable Atoms

Chemistry and Physics of Solid Surfaces VII

Part of the book series: Springer Series in ((SSSUR,volume 10))

Abstract

The study of the surface interactions of slow ions and metastably excited atoms is a part, at the low energy end, of the field of particle-solid interactions. It has lead to a detailed understanding of a number of interesting and important phenomena. This, in turn, has made possible the development of two interrelated electron spectroscopies of surfaces based on electron ejection induced by ion neutralization or metastable atom de-excitation. These are among the most surface specific of the spectroscopies applied to surface studies because they involve the phenomenon of quantum mechanical electron tunneling. The purpose in this paper is to discuss, from an historical perspective, the nature of the atom-solid electronic interactions that underlie INS and MDS and give them their individual characteristics.
