Alle Mammalia haben akzessorische Geschlechtsorgane, von denen die Prostata immer vorhanden ist, während Samenblasen fehlen können. Es werden diffuse, knotige und diffus-knotige (Misch-) Formen der Prostata unterschieden. Beim Menschen handelt es sich um eine knotige Prostata.
