Displaced and Excess Workers: Rebalancing the Workforce in the Factories of the Future

As corporations begin to create their “factories of the future” by implementing advanced manufacturing technologies (AMT) and complex integrating systems like computer integrated manufacturing (CIM), one of the major expectations is that there will be a sudden reduction in the number of individuals in the workforce. In addition to highlighting the myth of massive displacement, this paper presents a rebalancing strategy which may help clarify the issues and identify a range of tactics to effectively manage the organization during its transition.
