Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common of the diseases of human joints, is probably best considered as a response to a number of different pathogenetic factors that vary from patient to patient. The end result of these factors is degeneration of articular cartilage. This produces characteristic clinical features including joint pain largely on motion or weight bearing, crepitus, and limitation of motion without systemic features. At a 1985 workshop attempts at formulating a uniform definition were made, but unanimity was not attained [9].
