Convection in Binary Mixtures

Abstract

Experimental results are presented for convection in shallow layers of binary mixtures heated from below. We used both ethanol-water mixtures at room temperature[1,2] and 3He-4He mixtures at 2.2 K.[3,4] The primary difference between the two cases is the value of the Prandtl number σ, which is about 18 in the room-temperature system and about 0.6 in the cryogenic case. Both were studied in long, narrow containers in which convection rolls are expected to be parallel to the short sidewalls.
