Zusammenfassung
Seit Ende der 70er Jahre ist bekannt, daß eine zunehmende Anzahl meist junger weiblicher Personen unter episodischen, suchtartigen Eßanfällen leidet. 1980 wurde dieses Syndrom süchtiger Nahrungsaufnahme von der American Psychiatric Association als eine eigenständige Erkrankung anerkannt und in der 3. Ausgabe des Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) unter der Bezeichnung Bulimia nervosa aufgeführt. Hauptsymptome dieser Störung bestehen in einer übertriebenen Furcht vor einer Gewichtszunahme, dem wiederholten, anfallartig auftretenden Verschlingen großer Mengen hochkalorischer, meist süßer Nahrung sowie in dem Bewußtsein, daß dieses Eßverhalten abnormal sei.
